Strengthening of the Italian Research Infrastructure for Metrology and Open Access Data in support to the Agrifood
METROFOOD-IT on stage at the XLII National Convention of the Italian Society of Agricultural Chemistry
From September 9 to 11, 2024, the XLII NATIONAL CONFERENCE of the Italian Society of Agricultural Chemistry took place in Alghero, titled The Contribution of Agricultural Chemistry to the Global Challenge for a Sustainable Crop Production and Preservation of Ecosystem Services.
The scientific program, structured into four sessions, addressed various topics related to the soil/plant/environment/food system with a multidisciplinary approach. The food session was introduced by the keynote lecture “Upcycled foods: challenges and opportunities” delivered by Dr. Simona Grasso from University College Dublin (Ireland). In the same session, the oral presentation “Tracing the geographic origin of foods: the application of multielement analysis to tomato soils and fruits” was given by Prof. Paola Adamo from the University of Naples Federico II. The study, initiated within the TOMATO TRACE 4.0 project and continued within the METROFOOD-IT Research Infrastructure, developed a linear discriminant model for the authentication of the geographic origin of the Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio PDO (which we discussed in this article https://www.metrofood.it/media-room/news/tomato-trace-progetto-apripista-per-la-tracciabilita-e-la-qualita-delle-produzioni-dop.html) based on the elemental composition of the tomato, particularly its content of non-essential elements such as Strontium, Rubidium, Cesium, and Barium. The conference was also an opportunity to present the new Horizon Europe AQUASERV project to the attending scientific community, in which METROFOOD-IT participates with the Food Authenticity, Safety and Quality (FASQ) laboratory at UNINA.
